Learn about the Ways to File a Claim against Chime

File a Claim against Chime in Small Claims Court

What is it? Even though your user agreement with chime probably prevents you from joining most lawsuits, small claims court is one exception. This is a way for you to bring your issue before a local judge. You are entirely responsible for following the procedures based on where you live, making sure your case qualifies, paying the court fees, and going to and from the courthouse to submit different paperwork. Most small claims court limits range from $2,500 to $10,000 , and you can only get compensation for a dollar value amount.

When to try it: Try it when you have a lot of time and energy on your hands and you want to go before the public to get compensation.

What you need to do:  Find your local small claims court and follow their steps for filing a court suit. You might have to look online or visit the courthouse for this information. Every courthouse is different and while the steps are usually simpler than regular lawsuits, you still have to follow each and every one or your case will be thrown out.

What to expect: If you follow all of the steps perfectly and you have a strong case against Chime, with good evidence to back your case up, it’s very likely that you’ll get compensation. What’s more, Chime may offer a settlement in exchange for dropping the lawsuit early on.

File a Complaint against Chime with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

What is it? The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (“CFPB”) is a federal government agency that regulates much of their business. The CFPB provides an informal channel for consumers to submit claims and complaints against Chime. Their internal procedures determine what happens next. You can read more about this here.

When to try it:  When you are frustrated and you want to make your complaint known not just to the public but to the government, this is a good option. It won’t get you compensation like small claims court but it will make sure someone knows about your issue.

What you need to do: File an informal complaint on the CFPB’s public website by following the instructions here.

What to expect: When you file a complaint it gets posted in a public database, it might even be used by the bureau to follow up with Chime or create future regulations to safeguard against the same type of action.

File a Better Business Bureau Complaint against Chime

What is it? The Better Business Bureau (“BBB”) and its local chapters are private organizations that collect and publish complaints against a wide range of companies. They collect data like customer complaints and give different companies a rating. This rating is subject to change based on things like what complaints are lodged against the company, whether the company responds, and so forth.

When to try it: Chime has a chance to respond to their BBB page. When you see that they are actively engaged, submit your complaint and you’re more likely to get a response. However, you can submit a complaint at any time if you just want your dissatisfaction out there online.

What you need to do: Go to Chime’s BBB profile and follow the instructions for submitting a complaint.

What to expect: If Chime decides to respond, they might reach out to you directly and try to resolve the matter. They might reach out and not resolve the matter. It’s entirely up to them.

File a Claim Against Chime through Independent Arbitration

What is it?  Even though your contract prevents you from suing in most courts, you have an alternative option which is independent arbitration. This allows you to file a claim that gets argued before an independent arbitrator. This is a process that costs money so most of the time big businesses will try to settle your claim as soon as you put them on notice that you are pursuing consumer arbitration.

When to try it: Any situation in which you believe Chime has misled you, violated their contract with you, or violated the law can be pursued through arbitration.
